Another ridiculous cycle 24 #1020. There is absolutely no way this would have been observed in the past to compare donuts to donuts.

I think the powers that be are giving numbers to anything so their projections will have some kind of meaning. As it is they have been an embarrassment in the cycle 24 prediction department.

Mt. Wilson continues to report absolutely nothing, while the score keeps being run-up with the Sunspot Number count still at 12 after more than 33 hours. Yes, Solar Cycle 24 has defiantly started this time!little music to bide the time. Hopefully we will not have to wait a hundred years.

While we wait for the next appearance of disappearing and reappearing sunspot let’s have a

The exception to such changes in our world view happens when the new discovery directly challenges the State power structure, which I suspect is the case here. Having proclaimed that the Sun has no significant impact on terrestrial climate the people who stand to profit handsomely from the new State Religion don’t want to hear from messengers proclaiming that their new god has feet of clay, just like all the gods before them.

Where’s the beef on that spotburger?
I’d class 1020 as a transitory subspot.
Those are the things that you count with the major spot in the group…the pinholes.
You would NOT be counting it as the major spot.
At that rate, the best day of 1019 (06/01) had a count of 220 or higher.
Oh well, rack it up to inflation. A speck is now counted as 10, and a real spot fetches 100.
So, for comparison, divide the 12 by 10 to get a spot count of 1.2
Split the paycheck accordingly between SOHO and Catania.
Each gets 60 cents for the day.

How credible are these experts?

Hood does not really know what he is talking about. And Pesnell’s statement that ‘nobody knows…’ is just CYA tactics by NASA that had bet everything on mighty high prediction of Dikpati et al. [“breakthrough” and all that], and now instead of admitting that they were wrong and others have a better prediction, they say that everybody is wrong and nobody knows… Typical PR stuff.

Angular size today is 31′ 30″
On the 10th it was 31′ 30″ (The Sky v.5 LII)
On the 1st of June it was 31′ 32″.
The MDI Continuum of 06/10/2009 19:12UT had 960 pixels across the Sun’s disk. (31,511 – 991,511).
That is 1.96875 arcsec/pixel.
Today’s Continuum 20090612 17:36UT measures the same.
MDI Continuum of 20090601 16:00UT has 961 pixels across (31,511 – 992,511) or 1.96878 arcsec/pixel.
It’s actually slowing down in apparent size shrink right now.
On the 15th of May it was 31′ 38″ of arc.
That will certainly mess up your alignment.

And, wouldn’t you know it, SWPC/NOAA records a spot, but nobody knows who saw it, and there are no images of it yet.
Why do I get the feeling that this will turn out to be another 30 minute wonder?

The sun received a sunspot number of 12 today as sunspot 1020 reappared. I was at work all day long and it looks like i missed the two small specks show. I don’t know how it received a sunspot number, but it did.

Simon

UPDATE: DICEVO CHE DOVEVAMO OCCUPARCI DI ALTRO, ED IL SOLE SEMBRA REAGIRE ALLE MACCHIE CHE NON HA PRODOTTO MA CHE GLI SONO STATE ATTRIBUITE:

SOLAR FLUX A 68!!!
